The value of systems and complexity sciences for healthcare: a review
نویسندگان
چکیده
Overview The analysis of healthcare systems by considering them as complex adaptive systems (CAS) (Holland 2012) is a new and emerging field. The key idea is based on the inherent complexity of healthcare systems—in terms of the dynamics, nonlinearity, and unpredictability (Lipsitz 2012). While healthcare systems are naturally linked with CAS, there has always been a strong need for a compendium with a focus specifically on the needs of healthcare professionals and researchers. Here, we review the edited proceedings of the 1st International Conference on Systems and Complexity Sciences for Healthcare. This conference took place in the Washington DC, USA. The proceedings of the conference were published as a book titled “The value of systems and complexity sciences for healthcare” This book has been edited by Joachim P. Sturmberg.

Complex Leadership in Healthcare: A Scoping Review
Background Nowadays, health systems are generally acknowledged to be complex social systems. Consequently, scholars, academics, practitioners, and policy-makers are exploring how to adopt a complexity perspective in health policy and system research. While leadership and complexity has been studied extensively outside health, the implications of complexity theories for the study of leader...
متن کاملArtificial Intelligence Tools in Health Information Management
Application of ICT in health (eHealth) has become an integral part of modern healthcare systems. Electronic health information management has proven useful in improving quality of health care, reducing costs and facilitating health research. However, the increasing complexity of healthcare and the growing demand for high quality healthcare delivery has created a need for eHealth systems with t...
متن کاملCOVID-19: A Window of Opportunity for Positive Healthcare Reforms
The current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is testing healthcare systems like never before and all efforts are now being put into controlling the COVID-19 crisis. We witness increasing morbidity, delivery systems that sometimes are on the brink of collapse, and some shameless rent seeking. However, besides all the challenges, there are also possibilities t...
متن کاملMedicalization Defined in Empirical Contexts – A Scoping Review
Background Medicalization has been a topic of discussion and research for over four decades. It is a known concept to researchers from a broad range of disciplines. Medicalization appears to be a concept that speaks to all, suggesting a shared understanding of what it constitutes. However, conceptually, the definition of medicalizat...
متن کاملUsing Complexity to Simplify Knowledge Translation; Comment on “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation”
Putting health theories, research and knowledge into practice is a challenge referred to as the knowledge-toaction gap. Knowledge translation (KT), and its related concepts of knowledge mobilization, implementation science and research impact, emerged to mitigate this gap. While the social interaction view of KT has gained currency, scholars have not easily made a link between KT and the concep...
متن کاملConnections, Communication and Collaboration in Healthcare’s Complex Adaptive Systems; Comment on “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation”
A more sophisticated understanding of the unpredictable, disorderly and unstable aspects of healthcare organisations is developing in the knowledge translation (KT) literature. In an article published in this journal, Kitson et al introduced a new model for KT in healthcare based on complexity theory. The Knowledge Translation Complexity Network Model (KTCNM) provides a fresh perspective by mak...
